Record a Dilution/Synthesis

This option records a user taking some of a stock to create a sub-sample. It also allows them to record a new descriptive name and adjust the units and concentration to better describe the sub-sample.

From the main menu Compounds,

  • Select Compound Details

The Compound Details screen will be displayed. By default, this shows the details of the last accessed compound. The default can be changed using Setup – Personal Settings

On the left-hand side of the screen, there is a box labelled Search For Reference.

  • Enter the unique reference code of the compound being used (or select it from the drop-down list if it has been used before)

This will display the details of the compound.

  • Select Dilute/synthesise from the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.

A blank Dilute/synthesise screen will be displayed which needs to be completed.

  • Enter the date/time that the sub-sample was taken/used.
  • Enter the department that used the sub-sample – this will fill in automatically if access is restricted to one department.
  • Enter the user who used the sub-sample – this will default to the current user.
  • Enter the protocol or licence that the sub-sample is for (if protocols are being used on your site).
  • Optionally, enter the project that the sub-sample was used for – this may be a project code or study number.
  • Generally, sub-samples are “in-use”, untick if the item is to be treated as a Stock item.
  • Enter the location that the compound will be used in or kept in whilst not directly in use. Depending on the configuration in use on your site you may need to select a location, store (and possibly store detail also).

You can then enter either:

  • The quantity being taken from the stock.
  • The activity being taken from the stock – decay corrected to the date and time entered.
  • The percentage of the stock being taken. Note that the percentage is always relative to the original stock, not what is currently remaining.

Entering one of these values will automatically calculate the other two. You can use this to calculate the amount of stock to use.

  • Enter the new quantity for the diluted/synthesised compound, optionally changing the units. (this will be the units for disposal or further synthesis)
  • Optionally change the units of activity/concentration if required for more scope in decimal places.
  • Enter the new catalogue code (e.g. for creating a new stock item).
  • Enter the new name for the sub-sample.
  • Enter the details/reference of any material added.
  • Update batch and lot number if applicable.
  • If automatic reference codes are not in use on your site, you will be required to enter a reference code for your sub-sample.
  • You may optionally enter the Lab Book Number (or any other reference to the work being carried).
  • You may optionally enter (or change) the expiry date for the material. Used, to highlight to a supervisor when the compound is unlikely to be of use, and should ideally be disposed of.

Clicking OK will confirm the details and add the new sub-sample. The stock compound will be automatically reduced by the amount taken. You can also use the OK + Repeat option if you need to create several similar sub-samples.
